The month of April brings with it a sense of renewal and promise, and for one determined scholar, it marked the beginning of an exciting journey. In April 2022, Thomas Michael Salankole received a life-changing scholarship offer from the Pan African University to pursue a master’s degree in the Mineral Exploration Programme at the PAULESI-Pan African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences.
The transition from an engineering major to a geology program was no small feat. The first few months were filled with challenges, as Salankole adjusted to the intricacies of the earth sciences. But he didn’t allow these hurdles to deter him. Instead, he embraced the opportunity to delve into the world of minerals, rocks, and geological processes.
As an aspiring mining professional, Salankole’s vision extends beyond personal achievement. His goal is to become a well-rounded industry expert who can harness Africa’s abundant mineral resources for the betterment of its people. With determination and resilience, he navigated through coursework, seminars, and research projects, culminating in the successful defense of his final thesis.
Salankole expressed his gratitude to the institutions that supported him on this transformative journey. “I want to extend my profound thanks to the Pan African University, the PAULESI-Pan African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences (Including Health & Agriculture), and the African Union,” he said. “Their investment in education and research is shaping the future of our continent.”
He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his academic advisors. Prof. Gbenga Okunlola provided invaluable guidance, and Dr. Olawale Kayode AROMOLARAN offered unwavering support throughout the program. Salankole expressed his appreciation for the entire staff of the Department of Geology at the University of Ibadan, where he honed his skills and passion.
As the academic year draws to a close, Salankole stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of education. His journey from engineering to geology exemplifies the spirit of growth and adaptability, and he looks forward to contributing to Africa’s mineral sector in meaningful ways.
