The Sierra Leone Renaissance Movement have expressed appreciation to Parliament for putting on hold the proposed changes to the Freetown to Masiaka toll gate tariffs that were set to be effective on March 1.

The Movement in a press release stated that Parliament in a meeting on February 29, 2024 made a decision to halt the proposed changes to the toll gate tariffs. They stated that “This decisive action demonstrates a dedication to inclusive governance and a genuine regard for the well-being of all citizens.”

The Press Release cited that Parliament after a comprehensive examination and a preliminary hearing by the Committee on Works, a Public Consultation organized by the esteemed Speaker of Parliament, Honorable Abass Bundu made the said decision.

The four critical questions laid out by the Speaker played a pivotal role in shaping the deliberations and ensuring a comprehensive examination of the merits of the proposed changes. The proposed legislation to modify the toll gate fees was presented in parliament and assigned to the Committee on Works for additional consideration.

The Chair of Renaissance Movement, Mahmoud Koroma said, “We are pleased with Parliament’s decision to suspend the proposed changes to toll gate tariffs. This demonstrates a willingness to engage with the concerns of the public and carefully consider the potential impact of such amendments, particularly given the current economic climate in our country. Their dedication to representing the interests of their constituents is commendable, and we look forward to continued collaboration in addressing issues that affect our nation.”

The Movement extended their thanks to Honorable Bashiru Silikie, Chair of the Committee on Works, for his leadership throughout the public hearing process. Additionally, they recognize the Committee’s proactive efforts in addressing and incorporating their submissions and concerns.

The Renaissance Movement recognizes the significant investments made by CRSG in Sierra Leone and calls upon them to maintain transparency and openness as all stakeholders work toward a mutually beneficial resolution.

Parliament adjourned its sitting to next week Thursday, allowing the Committee on Works ample time to conduct further due diligence on this matter.

The Movement ended in expressing their comittment to  work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of Sierra Leoneans are heard and considered in decision-making processes.
