The Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet) at Tower Hill, Freetown, has reported a significant heavy rainfall event earlier today.

From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the weather station recorded a cumulative rainfall of 106mm. This substantial precipitation has prompted warnings from SLMet regarding potential localized flooding within Freetown and various other regions across the country.

The agency’s meteorologists have observed that the heavy rainfall, coupled with the already saturated ground from previous rain showers, increases the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and places with inadequate drainage systems. As a result, residents in Freetown and other vulnerable locations are strongly advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and minimize potential property damage.

SLMet has urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through areas prone to flooding. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution, as waterlogged roads can be hazardous. Furthermore, those residing in flood-prone zones are encouraged to move to higher ground if possible and to secure their belongings to prevent water damage.

In anticipation of further rainfall, SLMet continues to monitor the weather patterns closely and will provide timely updates to keep the public informed. The agency is also coordinating with local disaster management authorities to ensure a swift response in case of emergencies.

Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local news channels and SLMet’s official communication platforms for ongoing weather updates and safety advisories. Community leaders and emergency services are on standby to assist those in need and to facilitate any necessary evacuations.
