The Pujehun District Council has taken a major step to improve healthcare access in Londela Town, Kpaka Chiefdom, by initiating plans to establish a temporary health centre for residents.
The decision was made during a council meeting held on 26 March 2026 in Londela, where local leaders, youths, and community members gathered to discuss key development challenges affecting the area. A major concern raised during the meeting was the lack of nearby healthcare services for residents.
According to discussions at the meeting, Londela Town currently has no functioning health facility, forcing residents to travel long distances to seek medical care. Reports indicate that the nearest health centre is located more than nine miles away and can only be reached by boat or ferry, creating serious risks, especially during emergencies.
In response to this challenge, the community offered a building that can be used as a temporary health centre while longer-term solutions are being explored. This move was welcomed by the council as a practical step toward addressing urgent healthcare needs in the area.
Chairman of the Pujehun District Council, Foday Kandeh Rogers, assured residents that the council will work with relevant authorities to fast-track the process and ensure that healthcare services are made available as soon as possible. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the council, government institutions, and the community in improving service delivery.
“We will engage the appropriate authorities to ensure healthcare services reach the people of Londela,” he said, noting that access to basic health services is a fundamental need.
The initiative highlights ongoing efforts by local authorities to improve living conditions in rural communities, where access to essential services such as healthcare remains limited. Experts say such temporary solutions can help bridge urgent gaps while more permanent health infrastructure is developed.
Pujehun District, located in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone, is largely rural, with many communities facing challenges in accessing healthcare due to distance and poor transport systems.
Residents of Londela have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the temporary facility will reduce travel time, save lives, and improve overall health outcomes in the community.
The establishment of the temporary health centre is expected to serve as an immediate relief for residents, while discussions continue on building a permanent health facility in the future.
