Freetown, Sierra Leone – Upon his return from “Place des Nations” in Switzerland, Musa Timothy Kabba, Sierra Leone’s representative, presented a symbolic and historic chair to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh. This chair, a powerful symbol of a world grappling with ongoing conflicts and the frequent disregard of International Humanitarian Law, serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by countless civilians worldwide.

The chair, which is 124 years old, embodies the resilience and the enduring pledge of nations like Sierra Leone to uphold the principles of the Geneva Conventions. It represents a world in turmoil, where the laws meant to protect civilians during conflicts are too often ignored, highlighting the urgent need for global action and renewed commitment.

In a solemn ceremony, President Bio graciously accepted the chair on behalf of Sierra Leone, expressing deep gratitude for Switzerland’s recognition of the country’s unwavering dedication to the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law. He reflected on Sierra Leone’s transformation from a nation once ravaged by war to one that now stands as a beacon of peace and resilience.

“This chair is more than just a piece of history; it is a symbol of our collective responsibility to protect those most vulnerable in times of conflict,” President Bio stated. “Sierra Leone has emerged stronger from its own difficulties, and we are committed to ensuring that for the next 75 years and beyond, we will continue to uphold the principles of the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law.”

The presentation of the chair underscores Sierra Leone’s role on the international stage as a steadfast advocate for peace and humanitarian law. It also reaffirms the nation’s pledge to contribute to global efforts aimed at safeguarding human rights and ensuring the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

As Sierra Leone continues to build on its legacy of peace and stability, the symbolic chair will serve as a constant reminder of the importance of resilience, commitment, and the shared responsibility to uphold the rule of law in the face of adversity.
