President Julius Maada Bio, in his capacity as **Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has led a high-level mission to Guinea-Bissau to engage the country’s military leadership on the political transition process.

The visit followed decisions taken at the 68th ECOWAS Summit. President Bio said the delegation held constructive discussions with the High Military Command, led by Major-General Horta Inta-a, focusing on the way forward for restoring constitutional order and political stability.

During the engagement, President Bio reiterated the ECOWAS Authority’s call for a short transition period overseen by an inclusive government. He stressed that such a government should reflect Guinea-Bissau’s full political spectrum and broader society, in line with regional democratic principles.

President Bio was joined on the mission by Bassirou Diomaye Faye, signalling strong regional backing for dialogue and cooperation. Also part of the delegation was Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.

ECOWAS officials said the discussions were aimed at encouraging consensus, inclusiveness, and respect for constitutional norms. They noted that sustained engagement with national authorities and stakeholders is critical to ensuring a peaceful and credible transition.

Guinea-Bissau has faced repeated episodes of political instability in recent years, prompting continued involvement by regional bodies. ECOWAS says its current efforts are guided by summit decisions and a commitment to preventing further instability in the sub-region.

The ECOWAS Authority has indicated that it will continue consultations with Guinea-Bissau’s authorities and political actors, as part of broader efforts to support peace, stability, and democratic governance.
