The Sierra Leone Police have intensified operations to remove illegal garages, unauthorised structures and abandoned vehicles from key streets in central Freetown as part of efforts to improve traffic flow, public safety and urban order.
On Thursday, January 15, 2026, officers led by the Local Unit Commander of the Central Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) John Fayiah Tumbay, carried out clearance activities on major roads, including Edward Street, Gabriel Street, Victoria Street and Adelaide Street.
During the operation, several abandoned cars were removed and taken to the Kingtom Police Field, while roadside garages and other obstructions blocking traffic were dismantled by police officials. Authorities said the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that public roads are free for motorists and pedestrians.
Police have warned that similar actions will continue across the city to maintain order and prevent unsafe conditions caused by unregulated structures and broken-down vehicles, which they say contribute to congestion and increase the risk of accidents.
The cleanup follows other recent enforcement activities by law enforcement along central streets, including operations to clear abandoned vehicles, illegal garages and other hazards that pose risks to road users.
City residents and commuters have been urged to cooperate with police and avoid erecting or maintaining unauthorised structures on public roads, as the government seeks to create safer and more navigable streets throughout Freetown.
