Sierra Leone’s youth cycling team is gearing up for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games, set to take place on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago from August 4-11, 2023.
The team, known as UBUNTU Cycling Club, was created by decorated cyclist Fatima Deborah Conteh to empower other young women with a passion for the sport.
The goal of establishing the team was to achieve gender parity and represent Sierra Leone in international competitions that were previously unattempted and unrepresented. One of Conteh’s mentees, Oluwatosin Blessing Adeola Atunwa, is confident that the team will change Sierra Leone’s narrative of women in sports on a global scale.
