Nigerian Lawyer Earns Edinburgh Master’s Degree with Mastercard Scholarship

A young and brilliant Nigerian Lawyer, Mercy Tochukwu Christopher has bagged a Masters of Law Degree in Human Rights from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Mercy Tochukwu Christopher who graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria attended the Nigerian Law School to certify her as a Barrister before proceeding to the United Kingdom for her Master’s Degree using the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship of the University of Edinburgh.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholarship is a yearly award sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation allowing students from across the world to study in the United Kingdom. Tochukwu won the award in 2020, availing her the opportunity to study her Master’s of Law at the University of Edinburgh.

According to the University of Edinburgh’s Mastercard Scholarship website, application for the 2022 Scholarship Award opens on the 22nd of January 2022. Mercy Tochukwu Christopher, the Mastercard Scholar, expressed joy to have graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Distinction. Narrating her experience at the United Kingdom and the University of Edinburgh, she said she felt overwhelmed by a system so different from what she was used to before, making her question her abilities.

She wrote on Linkedin: “A year ago, I started my LLM Human Rights programme at The University of Edinburgh quite unsure of my place. I felt overwhelmed by a system so different from what I was used to and questioned my abilities.

“Yesterday, I graduated with a distinction! Next week, I will be concluding my research role with Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) – a job I started while writing my dissertation and starting a new position with Business & Human Rights Resource Centre.

“In all these, I think of my childhood, how these feats were beyond my imagination and feel thankful. Now, I am here and awaiting more to come.”

She thanked the Mastercard Foundation for granting her the rare opportunity to study in the United Kingdom, she also thanked her University Professors who helped her through her academic journey at the University of Edinburgh Law School.

“I am grateful for a lot of reasons – for the opportunity Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Edinburgh gave me, for my professors at University of Edinburgh Law School who helped me see the greatness within, for the Mastercard scholars in my cohort who became family, for those who supported even without knowing it, for my family who remind me of how far I have come, and for myself for daring to dream and believe,” she stated.
