Muhoozi Warns Bobi Wine: “When Museveni Is Done With You, It Will Be My Turn”

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has made strong comments about opposition leader Bobi Wine following Uganda’s recent presidential election.

In a message shared publicly, Muhoozi told Bobi Wine that he should be grateful he was allowed to contest the election in the first place. He said Bobi Wine never had a real chance against President Museveni, claiming that Ugandans “love Museveni to death.”

Muhoozi went further to say that Bobi Wine had been clearly defeated and should go home and prepare for the next election, where he believes the opposition leader would lose again. He added that when President Museveni eventually steps aside, he himself would be ready to face Bobi Wine and defeat him “shamelessly.”

Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a senior army officer and a powerful figure in Ugandan politics. There have been numerous rumors over the years that he might one day take over from his father as president. His latest statements have strengthened these opinions as well as concerns from critics about the involvement of the military in the politics of Uganda.

Bobi Wine, who was a musician and has since become a politician, has currently been the major opposition voice against Museveni’s leadership. He gets massive popular support from the youths. However, he has complained of intimidation and arrests imposed on him and his supporters during elections.

Muhoozi’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters of the ruling party see his words as confidence in Museveni’s popularity. Critics, however, say such statements are disrespectful and dangerous, especially when they suggest that opposition leaders are only allowed to contest at the pleasure of those in power.

Human rights and pro-democracy forces have long warned of a shrinking political space in Uganda. They say that statements like these call into question issues of justice, freedom of choice, and prospects for democracy in the country.
