Media Matters for Women (MMW) has launched a four days community training series focused on raising awareness and strengthening action against underage FGM. The workshops, running from Monday to Thursday, bring together teachers, pupils, and parents to deepen understanding and protect girls from the practice.
The first sessions engage teachers and pupils, equipping them with knowledge about the health risks, emotional effects, and legal implications of underage FGM. Later in the week, parents and guardians will participate in discussions on how to prevent the practice and explore safer cultural alternatives.
“Our schools and families must work hand in hand to protect girls from underage FGM,” said Alinah Kallon, MMW’s program director. “These workshops help communities build the confidence and skills needed to safeguard children.”
The initiative uses storytelling, group dialogue, and practical guidance to encourage long-term behaviour change. Community leaders and school authorities have welcomed the effort, noting its importance in promoting child protection and safeguarding the futures of young girls.
