The Mass Communication Students’ Association (MACOSA) has opened entries for its Creative Writing Challenge, a new initiative geared toward promoting the talent of young writers across the faculty and inspiring thoughtful engagement with national issues.
This semester’s competition invites participants to reflect on topics that mirror the country’s social, cultural, and economic landscape. Students may choose from themes such as Waste to Wealth, Health, Economy, Creative Industry, Justice on Trial, The Forgotten Heroes, Education in Crisis, and My Freetown, My Identity. Each theme encourages writers to examine the challenges and possibilities shaping everyday life in Sierra Leone.
The challenge is open to all registered MACOSA members. Prizes have been set to recognize outstanding work and to help promising voices reach a wider audience. The overall winner will receive Le600 and have their piece published in five major news outlets. The first runner-up will receive Le250 and be featured in two newspapers, while the second runner-up will receive Le150 along with publication in one newspaper.
Students are required to submit their entries to macosa2025@gmail.com
. Submissions must include the writer’s full name, department, registration number, and level of study. The deadline for entries is Thursday, December 25, at midnight.
