A renewable energy company, JIVO Energy, has completed the installation of Sierra Leone’s first hybrid off-grid energy system to power the Moyamba Town Mini-Grid, bringing reliable electricity to the community for the first time through a fully independent power solution.

The project, financed by the World Bank and implemented by UNOPS, took about 20 months to complete, followed by one year of operations and maintenance support to ensure smooth running of the system.

The new energy facility combines solar power, battery storage, and a backup diesel generator. It includes a 954.8 kilowatt solar photovoltaic plant, a battery energy storage system with over 2,000 kilowatt hours of capacity, and a 500 kVA generator. Together, they form a hybrid system that can supply electricity day and night, even when there is little sunlight.

Officials say the system will now provide steady and affordable power to homes, businesses, schools, and health centres in Moyamba, helping to improve living conditions and boost local economic activities.

Energy experts describe the project as a major milestone in Sierra Leone’s move toward clean and resilient power infrastructure, especially for towns not connected to the national grid. With better electricity access, residents are expected to benefit from improved healthcare services, longer business hours, and new job opportunities.

JIVO Energy has been working in renewable power across Africa and Asia since 2018, focusing on project development, engineering, construction, operations, and investment in clean energy. The company currently operates in more than 15 African countries and has completed projects in nations including Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Cape Verde, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

So far, the firm has built over 80 megawatts of solar power plants and more than 50 megawatt hours of battery storage systems, with many more projects under development across the continent.

The Moyamba mini-grid project is seen as a model for expanding electricity access in rural and semi-urban areas of Sierra Leone, using renewable energy to support long-term development while reducing reliance on costly fuel generators.
