Sierra Leone will observe its first-ever National Remembrance Day on January 18, 2026, the government has announced in a public notice. The day is dedicated to honouring victims and survivors of the country’s decade-long civil war and promoting peace and unity.

According to the notice issued by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, the day will not be a public holiday, and schools, markets, businesses and government offices will continue to operate as usual.

President Julius Maada Bio is expected to deliver a national address to officially inaugurate the day, pay tribute to victims and survivors, and call on citizens to reaffirm their commitment to peace and national cohesion.

As part of the observance, a two-minute traffic stop and moment of silence will be held at 12:00 noon across the country, with participation encouraged in schools, workplaces, markets, and places of worship. Radio and television stations are also expected to join the commemoration.

In the days leading up to January 18, citizens are encouraged to wear a white ribbon or cloth, the official symbol of remembrance, peace and unity. Communities, schools and public spaces are also urged to establish Walls of Remembrance with names of victims, messages of reflection and pledges for peace.

Officials say the annual observance aims to honour those affected by Sierra Leone’s civil war, which lasted from 1991 to 2002, and to ensure that the lessons of the conflict are remembered as the nation strives for lasting peace.
