Njala University has singled out Inspector General of Police, IGP William Fayia Sellu, for a rare mark of recognition with an honorary award of distinction, a move the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, described as an endorsement of ethical leadership and accountability.
The event, which was held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, was a momentous juncture between the academic and security arms of Sierra Leone. Rather than a mere ceremonial act, university management contextualised the award as a tactical recognition that education, investment, and national development could not thrive without the bedrock of peace and public order.
According to the Vice Chancellor and Principal, Professor Koroma, the mandate of the university goes beyond the four walls of the classroom to the recognition of figures that have stabilize national institutions. He said his tenure as IGP is so far characterized by efforts in building institutional credibility, respect for human dignity—essentials he termed necessary for the country’s development trajectory.
The function attracted a mix of top-level security personnel and academics of the highest rank. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Sahr Yomba Senesie, described the accolade as a “defining moment” for the force, insinuating that such accreditation coming from a learning institution of high caliber reflects growing public trust in the police command’s vision and discipline.
In accepting the citation and the award, IGP Sellu described the moment as humbling. He used his acceptance speech to bridge the gap between the two institutions, acknowledging the significant number of Njala University alumni currently serving within the ranks of the Sierra Leone Police.
