U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed the arrest and deportation of Mariama Sia Kanu, a Sierra Leonean national who was convicted of several serious crimes in the United States.

According to ICE, Mariama Sia Kanu was found guilty of two counts of homicide. Court records also show that she had four convictions related to driving under the influence, as well as three counts of larceny and burglary. Because of these convictions, she became subject to removal under U.S. immigration law.

ICE said Kanu had a final order of removal dated July 5, 2022. This means the legal process allowing her deportation was already completed before the recent enforcement action. Her arrest and removal were carried out as part of a wider federal operation aimed at locating and deporting foreign nationals with serious criminal records.

In a statement, ICE explained that U.S. law requires the removal of non-citizens who are convicted of grave offenses, especially violent crimes. The agency said cases involving homicide and repeat offenses are treated as a high priority.

“ICE also emphasized that its activities are particularly concerned with the issue of public safety,” the report states. “According to officials, carrying out immigration laws is part of keeping communities safe by making sure that those who are convicted of serious offenses are deported from the United States when the law permits.” The deportation of Mariama Sia Kanu has brought to the fore the issues of immigration enforcement in the United States and the consequences of severe crimes by non-citizens.
