The Government of Sierra Leone has reinforced its dedication to justice and healthcare reforms through key updates provided by Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, and Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby. Speaking at the Ministry’s weekly press briefing, both ministers underscored the administration’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and improving the well-being of its citizens.
Minister Chernor Bah proudly announced Sierra Leone’s success in appealing the disqualification of its Under-17 football team from the WAFU Zone A tournament. The team had initially been removed from the tournament following a failed MRI test for over-aged players. However, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) contested the decision, leading to an independent review that cleared the athletes to compete. Minister Bah highlighted the importance of upholding due process and emphasized that Sierra Leone will always stand for justice.
“Sierra Leone’s successful appeal reinforces our belief in fairness and the importance of fighting for what is right. We are proud of this victory and the national pride it restores,” Bah said. This triumph in sports mirrors the government’s broader commitment to ensuring that justice is accessible and reliable in all spheres of society.
In an effort to address economic inequalities, Minister Bah also spoke about the government’s initiative to release prisoners who were incarcerated for their inability to pay fines for minor offenses. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, the initiative has covered the fines for many individuals, freeing them from unjust imprisonment due to poverty.
“No one should be imprisoned simply because they are unable to pay small fines,” Minister Bah emphasized. This initiative aligns with the government’s mission to promote equity and fairness, ensuring that economic disadvantages do not lead to unnecessary and prolonged incarceration.
Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, addressed growing concerns about a potential doctors’ strike over delays in fuel allocations necessary for healthcare professionals to perform their duties. Acknowledging the concerns of the Medical and Dental Association, Dr. Demby assured the public that the government had allocated funds for the first two quarters and was actively working to resolve the issue for the remaining quarters.
“We understand the critical role our doctors play, especially in remote areas. We are working tirelessly to ensure their needs, including fuel allocations, are met,” Dr. Demby assured. He appealed to the nation’s doctors to continue their service with compassion, despite the challenges they face.
