Freetown has been recognized as one of the top nine destinations to visit in Spring 2023 by UK travel site, Wanderlust. The city’s recent opening of a new airport terminal, which is five times larger than the previous one, has generated excitement among tourists

Wanderlust highlighted that Sierra Leone’s tourism industry is expected to undergo significant changes with the introduction of the new terminal in Freetown. Notably, the terminal is the only green-powered facility in the entire sub-region.

In addition to the new airport terminal, Wanderlust UK encouraged spring travelers to explore the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary located in Regent Village, Western Rural District. The sanctuary offers a chance to observe and interact with hundreds of rescued chimpanzees, along with eco-lodges for overnight stays.

While some of the other destinations mentioned in the top nine list are located in the UK or its territories, such as Guernsey and Yorkshire, there are also international options like Washington DC, Monterrey County, Toronto, A Coruña, Al ula, and Antigua and Barbuda.

Earlier this year, Time Magazine also recognized the Freetown peninsula as one of the top 100 places to visit in 2023. Many of the reasons listed by Wanderlust were also highlighted by Time, except for the inclusion of the white sandy beaches along the Freetown coast.
