Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, has officially unveiled the newly renovated Ward 9 at Connaught Hospital, describing the project as a major boost to women’s healthcare in the country.

The unveiling ceremony took place on Tuesday, where the First Lady joined members of the SLPP North America Women’s Council to commission the renovated ward, which is dedicated specifically to female patients.

According to her, Ward 9 had been in poor condition for some time and was in urgent need of renovation. She said she was pleased to see the transformation and praised the collective effort of women supporting initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services for citizens.

“I am delighted to see vibrant women coming together to support my efforts in improving healthcare for our citizens,” she said.

The First Lady also revealed that, in addition to the Ward 9 project, she has contributed to the renovation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Connaught Hospital. She noted that these efforts complement the ongoing construction of the 34 Military Hospital, which is expected to further strengthen healthcare delivery.

She extended special thanks to Madam Lulu Agba and the SLPP North America Women’s Council for what she described as a patriotic and commendable initiative.

The First Lady said she looks forward to seeing more such contributions in the future, adding that partnerships and collective responsibility remain key to improving healthcare infrastructure across Sierra Leone.
