The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has given former Sierra Leone President, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, the green light to seek political asylum in Nigeria. This follows the accusations of treason against Koroma for his alleged involvement in a botched coup attempt in Sierra Leone on November 26, 2023.
The ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Alieu Touray, wrote a letter to the current Sierra Leone President, Julius Bio, asking for the former President to be allowed to move to Abuja, Nigeria temporarily. The letter, dated January 2, 2024, was also shared with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, and Senegalese President Macky Sall. ECOWAS expressed its concern for the security and welfare of Dr Ernest Bai Koroma during the legal process. The letter also reaffirmed the organisation’s dedication to supporting peace, stability, and the rule of law in the West African region.
Nigeria, as a member state of ECOWAS, has consented to host the former Sierra Leonean leader. The decision demonstrates the regional bloc’s position on encouraging diplomacy and conflict resolution among its member states.
Ernest Koroma will stay in Nigeria for the time being, while he faces serious charges in Sierra Leone, until the legal issues are settled and the political situation is stabilised in Sierra Leone.
