The EU Bus Tour 2025 has visited the Government Technical Institute (GTI) Dorma in Kono, showing how investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is creating opportunities for Sierra Leone’s young people.

The rehabilitation of GTI Dorma was carried out under the Youth Employment Promotion for Local Economic Development and TVET project. It is co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by GIZ Sierra Leone and Liberia in partnership with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Technical and Higher Education.

The campus has been transformed into a modern training hub, with three new vocational workshops, a classroom, a 10-bedroom dormitory, kitchen, and common room. New water and energy systems have been installed, along with perimeter fencing for safety.

GTI Dorma now offers practical training in areas such as auto mechanics, construction, hospitality, ICT, and HVAC. Each year, between 150 and 250 students are enrolled. The institute also piloted Sierra Leone’s new Dual Apprenticeship model, which combines classroom learning with on-the-job training.

Results Achieved So Far

  • 168 apprentices trained
  • 65 employees certified through Recognition of Prior Learning
  • Over 2,000 youth trained in technical skills
  • More than 5,300 young people trained in entrepreneurship and soft skills, with women making up 60%
  • 500+ youth placed in apprenticeships

Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Jacek Jankowski said: “Youth are the future of today. We must equip them with the skills and support needed to contribute meaningfully to nation-building. Team Europe remains committed to working alongside the Government to empower the youth of Salone.”

The project is part of wider efforts to boost skills, employment, and economic development in Sierra Leone, ensuring that young people are better prepared for jobs and entrepreneurship.
