The Environmental Protection Agency Sierra Leone has taken steps to improve the management of chemical and hazardous waste in Freetown, as part of efforts to protect public health and the environment.

The Agency highlighted the growing risks linked to poor handling and disposal of chemical waste, warning that such practices can harm water sources, land, and human health if not properly controlled.

Officials say plans are underway to introduce better systems for the collection, storage, and treatment of hazardous materials. This includes efforts to regulate how chemicals are handled by industries and institutions across the city.

The move forms part of a broader national strategy to strengthen pollution control and improve environmental safety. The EPA is also working on developing an integrated chemical and waste management system to handle dangerous substances more effectively.

Authorities stressed the need for stronger enforcement of environmental laws, as well as increased public awareness about the dangers of improper waste disposal.

Freetown, like many growing cities, faces serious waste management challenges, with rising population and urbanisation putting pressure on existing systems. Experts say improving chemical waste management is critical to reducing pollution and preventing health risks.

The EPA says it will continue to work with partners and stakeholders to build a safer and cleaner environment for residents.
