Sierra Leonean author and journalist Mohamed Dauda Kamara has once again captured the essence of his nation’s rich cultural heritage in his latest book, When Father Speaks There Is Wisdom. Mohamed Dauda Kamara is already known for his acclaimed works Tatamina and Seven Days and Seven Nights on the Riverside, Kamara uses his new book “When Father Speaks There Is Wisdom” to explore the art of proverbs—a traditional form of communication deeply valued in Sierra Leone and other African societies.
Kamara’s motivation for When Father Speaks There Is Wisdom stems from his observations of the generational gap in understanding proverbs. While these sayings are known for their layered meanings, they are increasingly neglected by younger generations who, unlike the older generations, spend less time with their elders. The author, who grew up hearing his father often use proverbs in formal settings, felt inspired to preserve this unique form of wisdom for a new generation. He does so through an original collection of proverbs that he himself crafted, each carefully reflecting the nuances of his community.
In Sierra Leone, proverbs are not just words but are considered an art form. Each line is loaded with meaning, steeped in the wisdom of the culture, and often specific to a tribe or a particular region. In When Father Speaks There Is Wisdom, Kamara reminds readers that true understanding of proverbs requires contemplation and maturity. “Proverbs are rarely spoken among the wise,” he writes
