Eastern Technical University in Kenema has opened a new page in its story with the election of its first female Students’ Union President and has officially inaugurated its new leader, Mariame Baimba Keita, who became the first female president of the students since the university was founded.
Inauguration ceremony took place on the university campus, where Ms. Keita led the official procession in front of fellow students, lecturers, and invited guests. Her presence at the head of the ceremony was a proud moment for many and a clear sign of change within the institution.
Her election is being seen as more than a student victory. “It has been described as “a powerful statement about the importance of women in leadership, particularly in areas which would have historically been the domain of men.” Certainly, for students and faculty, her ascension to leadership simply underlines leadership through ability, vision, and dedication and not through gender.”
According to students of Eastern Technical University, her election victory signifies a mentality shift among the younger generations who are more ready than ever to put their trust in female authority figures. It also brings into focus the need for women to have opportunities in leadership positions where they can prove themselves.
As the new President of the Students’ Union, Mariame Baimba Keita is expected to serve as a representative of the interests of the students and to work in partnership with the administration of the university to ensure that the conditions for learning and living for the students are improved.
