The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs recently hosted the Children’s Forum Network (CFN) elections, a key event aimed at fostering youth leadership and strengthening advocacy for children’s rights. Held at the NACWAC building on Tongay Road, the event attracted various stakeholders, including civil society representatives, educators, students, and members of the press.

Five secondary schools—Saint Paul’s Secondary School, Saint Stephen’s Secondary School, Holy Rosary Secondary School, Massam Government Secondary School, and Every Nation Secondary School—participated in the election process. The students gathered to select new CFN leaders committed to advancing children’s welfare and supporting the network’s mission to empower young voices across Sierra Leone.

In a powerful opening address, Abdulai Jasil Sillah, CEO of YARD-SL, urged attendees to prioritize character and capability over superficial factors. “Make your choice based on who can best lead and represent the interests of children,” Sillah advised, emphasizing that leadership requires more than appearance or financial status.

Kalilu John Ken Swaray, representing the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, reflected on CFN’s founding purpose: to address the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). “The vision of CFN is for all children to live in dignity and respect,” Swaray stated, underscoring the network’s commitment to advocating against child abuse and promoting a safe environment for all children, especially girls.

The election was overseen by CFN’s National Vice President and chief commissioner for the elections, Morison Bockarie, who announced that four key positions—president, vice president, secretary, and public relations officer (PRO)—were contested. A total of 585 votes were cast, with 522 valid votes and 63 deemed invalid.

Election Results:

  • President: Hassan Rogers, who won with 55 votes, besting Mariama Fortune with 29 votes.
  • Vice President: Alice M. Koroma, receiving 70 votes to defeat Edwin M. Feika, who had 9 votes.
  • Secretary: Musa Norwah, elected with 57 votes over Princess Sesay’s 20 votes.
  • Public Relations Officer: Haja Brima, who secured 53 votes, prevailing over Morice Conteh’s 29 votes.

Commissioner Bockarie closed the event by encouraging the newly elected leaders to work collaboratively for CFN’s continued success. He praised the participants for a peaceful and transparent election, marking a critical milestone in the district’s efforts to uplift youth voices and promote children’s rights.

The newly elected CFN leaders expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to serve with integrity and dedication, representing their peers and ensuring that children’s rights remain a priority in Pujehun District and beyond. This election represents a vital step toward empowering youth, ensuring they are heard and advocating fiercely for their rights.
