In a stirring address to Sierra Leonean athletes competing at the All African Games in Ghana, Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh emphasized the often overlooked sacrifices made by athletes in their pursuit of excellence.

“Many people don’t understand the sacrifice you put to train, take care of your bodies and support each other,” Dr. Sengeh remarked, acknowledging the dedication of the athletes.

Expressing pride in the representation of Sierra Leonean sports, the Chief Minister commended the LABRUM partnership as a testament to national pride. “It’s a really good thing for our country because you are representing a Sierra Leonean brand which is good,” he noted.

He extended gratitude to the Ministry of Sports, National Sports Authority and other stakeholders for facilitating the athletes’ participation, while also expressing his personal admiration for their endeavors. “If I had my way, I would have done sport,” he confessed.

President Julius Maada Bio conveyed his best wishes to the athletes, urging them to represent the nation with distinction. “President Bio sent his regards and hopes that you guys will represent us well by winning some medals,” Dr. Sengeh conveyed.

Acknowledging the challenges and constraints faced by athletes, the CM pledged continued support and efforts to address these issues. “We will continue to support you. There would be challenges and constraints, but let’s use them to get better,” he encouraged.

Emphasizing inclusivity, Dr. Sengeh affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring opportunities for all, regardless of background. “We want to make sure everyone is given the opportunity to participate, represent Sierra Leone, and hopefully be successful,” he affirmed.

Drawing inspiration from the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, Dr. Sengeh encouraged athletes to envision themselves in positions of leadership. “You should be seeing yourselves in her because that’s the same path you are taking. That’s a possibility,” he asserted.

In a final reflection, the Chief Minister dispelled the misconception of sports as a realm reserved for dropouts, highlighting the presence of sports personalities in high government positions. “Sport is not a sector for dropouts,” he declared.

With heartfelt gratitude and well wishes, Dr. Sengeh concluded, “I want to thank you all, and I wish you good luck.”
