Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney Warns of a Changing World Order as Global Powers Compete for Control

Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney stated: “The world is entering a very dangerous new era in which great powers do not feel constrained by rules, treaties, or shared values. The politics of the world is becoming more adversarial, in which strong countries use coercion, money, trade, and security to get what they want.”

The Prime Minister said the old “rules-based international order,” which many countries relied on after the Second World War, is breaking down. In that system, countries believed that laws, international institutions, and cooperation would protect smaller and middle-sized nations. According to him, that belief no longer matches reality.

He explained that today, big powers are using trade, energy, finance, and even food supply as weapons. Tariffs are used to punish rivals. Supply chains are manipulated to create pressure. Countries that depend too much on others are now exposed and vulnerable.

This warning connects closely to recent statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said that the United States must take control of Greenland for national security reasons. Trump has argued that Greenland’s location in the Arctic and its natural resources are too important to be left outside U.S. control.

Canada’s Prime Minister directly addressed this kind of thinking without naming Trump. He said Canada stands firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully supports Greenland’s right to decide its own future. He made it clear that no country should use power or pressure to take territory from another state under the excuse of security.

He stressed that sovereignty and territorial integrity must still matter, even in a world where power politics is rising. According to him, when strong countries start acting without limits, smaller and middle powers must work together instead of standing alone.

The Prime Minister warned that a world where every country builds walls around itself will be poorer, more unstable, and more dangerous. While nations must protect themselves, he said a nation can only feel secure through collective security, collective might, and balanced partnerships—not through force.

“He said that Canada has realized that it must change its approach and that it should build more strength at home through its investments in energy, technology, defense, and trade,” he said.

It can be noted here that Natural Resources Minister Joe. At the same time, Canada is forming new partnerships around the world so it does not depend too heavily on one powerful country.

He described this approach as being guided by values but grounded in reality. Canada, he said, will continue to support human rights, democracy, and international law, while also accepting that the world is more competitive and less predictable than before.

In a clear message to middle-sized nations, the Prime Minister said countries like Canada must act together. If they do not sit at the table where decisions are made, they risk becoming victims of decisions made by others.

By linking his speech to issues like Greenland, Arctic security, and great-power rivalry, the Canadian leader made one point clear: the world is changing fast, and pretending the old order still works is dangerous. For Canada and other middle powers, the choice is between silence and collective action, between weakness and shared strength.

He ended by saying the old world order is not coming back, and nostalgia will not solve today’s problems. Instead, countries must face reality, protect their independence, and work together to build a fairer and more stable future.
