Busan Stranger Returns Lost Tuition Savings to Sri Lankan Student

A Sri Lankan student living in Busan, South Korea, had an unexpected experience of relief when months of savings were recovered, all because of an honest stranger.

On the 26th of August, 2025, the student found herself crossing a street near a university located at Daeyeon dong when, by accident, she dropped an envelope containing about eight hundred and fifteen dollars. The money had been saved over several months to cover an upcoming tuition payment. Realising what had happened, she made her way to the Daeyeon Police Station to ask for help.

Still struggling with the language barrier, the student used a phone translator to explain the situation to officers. Police immediately began checking the area and reviewing nearby CCTV footage in hopes of tracing the missing envelope.

About five hours later, a Korean woman in her sixties walked into the same police station carrying an envelope. Inside was the exact amount the student had lost, with every bill intact. The woman explained that she had found the money on her way to work and decided to hand it over immediately, without knowing who the owner was.

When officers informed the student that her money had been found and returned the envelope, she broke down in tears. Then came hugs, expressions of gratitude, and a scene imbued with emotion.

In a city that may be marked by speed and routine, an act of honesty, however small, re-asserted a student’s belief and preserved her education.
