Islamiyat Ojelade, a Nigerian woman of talent, has achieved something remarkable in spite of not having a Bachelor‘s or Master‘s degree. A Higher National Diploma (HND) from the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro in Ogun State, coupled with an impeccable 3.89 grade point average, earned her the esteemed title of the finest graduate of the class of 2018.
The odds were stacked against her. After finishing her college degree, little to no support was offered, leaving her fearful and uncertain of the future. However, despite the doubt, Islamiyat had a “great ambition“ and after sharing it with her friends, family, and professors, she was able to gain admittance and merit scholarships from seven of the best universities in the United States for PhD programs.

She had beaten the prejudice that many HND holders face in Nigeria and demonstrated courage, tenacity and an unwavering desire to succeed. Florida State University, the University of Massachusetts Amhert, the University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, the University of North Texas, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Marquette University in Wisconsin all rewarded Islamiyat with a prestigious PhD scholarship, making her feat nothing short of extraordinary.
