On Sunday 7 December 2025, a group of soldiers in Benin briefly claimed they had toppled the government — but hours later the government said the attempt was foiled.
Early on Sunday morning, at least eight soldiers led by Pascal Tigri appeared on national television, declaring that they had seized power. They said they had removed Patrice Talon as president, suspended the constitution and dissolved all state institutions. The soldiers — calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation — also announced the closure of all borders.
Their broadcast sparked alarm across the country. Residents reported gunfire near the presidential residence in Cotonou. Soon after, the signal to state television and public radio was cut.
But within hours, authorities regained control. The Beninese Armed Forces — loyal to the government — moved quickly to contain the plot. The Benin Interior Ministry said the coup was thwarted and urged citizens to return to normal life. About 14 people were arrested in connection with the failed attempt.
The attempted coup comes as Benin prepares for a scheduled presidential election in April 2026. President Talon has served since 2016 and was expected to step down after his second term.
Several regional and international bodies condemned the coup attempt, warning against any attack on democratic order
