BBC Media Action Seeks Consultant for Journalist Safety Study

BBC Media Action has announced a new consultancy opportunity as part of its efforts to strengthen media safety and support journalists in Sierra Leone who have faced sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment (SEAH) in newsrooms.

The international organisation is leading the Public Interest Media and Healthy Information Environments (PIMHIE) programme, which aims to build stronger, more trusted media systems. As part of this work, BBC Media Action will conduct a feasibility study to set up the country’s first survivor support mechanism for journalists who have experienced SEAH.

The study, which aligns with Sierra Leone’s National Action Plan on media viability, will gather information from media stakeholders and present recommendations for a pilot support system by March 2026.

To carry out this task, BBC Media Action is hiring a consultant with expertise in safeguarding and SEAH issues. The selected consultant will spend up to 15 days in Sierra Leone, including travel, and another 15 days working remotely. The assignment will run from January to February 2026, with a total workload estimated at 20 to 30 days.

The consultant will be responsible for assessing existing structures, identifying local service providers, and helping to design a safeguarding framework and survivor protection protocol for journalists.

Interested applicants are asked to submit an up-to-date CV, a one-page letter of application, two references, and their freelance daily rate in GBP or USD. Applications should be sent to anindita.roy@uk.bbcmediaaction.org by 5pm GMT on 16 December 2025.

BBC Media Action says applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the closing date.
