Foday James Lumeh, a remarkable single-leg amputee footballer hailing from Sierra Leone, has achieved an extraordinary feat by becoming the first amputee to win the Turkish Super League. His triumph is not only a personal victory but also an inspiration to athletes worldwide. By showcasing his talent and resilience, Lumeh has placed Sierra Leone’s sporting prowess on the global stage.
Lumeh’s journey has been one of perseverance and determination. Having lost one of his legs due to a misfortune at the tender age of 7, he discovered amputee football when he was just 8 years old. Undeterred by his physical challenges, Lumeh pursued his passion for the sport. His unwavering commitment led him to join the Eyyübiye Belediyespor Amputee Football Team in Şanlıurfa, Turkey, during the beginning of the season. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, representing both his club and his country.
In Lumeh’s own words: “I had the passion and goal of being a professional football player. I came to Şanlıurfa to show my talent and what a West African player can do in a European country. Since I came here, I have received a lot of attention from my friends, family, and even my country because I transferred to Turkey to play in a European country. My goal is to showcase the talent I have. In Sierra Leone, people think that once you’re injured, you have no relevance to society, and I want to change that mindset.”
His remarkable journey serves as a beacon of hope for Sierra Leoneans, motivating them to strive for greatness. Lumeh’s resilience and positive mindset make him not only a football ambassador but also an embodiment of the indomitable spirit of his nation. As he continues to excel, he carries the dreams and aspirations of Sierra Leone, inspiring others to overcome obstacles and reach for the stars
