The Government of Sierra Leone has started consultations with the private sector and other stakeholders as it develops a trusted national digital identity framework aimed at improving access to public and private services.
The proposed system will be built around open-source technology, verifiable digital credentials and international standards for privacy, security and data sovereignty. Sierra Leone’s national identification infrastructure is based on MOSIP, an open-source digital identity platform.
The consultations brought together representatives from government, businesses, financial institutions, universities, civil society and development partners. Discussions focused on three major areas: trusted digital identity, secure digital payments and interoperable data exchange.
The engagement follows an agreement Sierra Leone signed with Bhutan and the Sign Foundation to support the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure agenda. The government says more consultations will follow as it develops the policies, governance structures and technical foundations needed for a secure and inclusive digital identity ecosystem.
