Sierra Leone and EU launch new chamber of commerce to boost trade

The European Union and the government of Sierra Leone have announced the creation of a new European Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) in Freetown, aimed at unlocking new trade and investment opportunities between West Africa and European markets.

The establishment of EuroCham was formally announced during high-profile celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of the bilateral relationship—commemorating 50 years since the EU established its diplomatic presence in Sierra Leone in 1976.

Speaking at the event at the Country Lodge Hotel in Freetown, EU Ambassador Jacek Jankowski described the initiative as a major milestone designed to deepen private sector ties. He noted that the chamber will provide a vital platform for businesses, helping local firms exploit Europe’s “Everything But Arms” trade scheme, which offers duty-free and quota-free access for Sierra Leonean exports into the EU.

“This is about moving from a traditional, aid-driven relationship to a broad strategic and economic alliance,” Ambassador Jankowski said, adding that the initiative aligns with the EU’s multi-billion-euro Global Gateway strategy focusing on green energy, digital transitions, and agricultural value chains.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, welcomed the announcement, highlighting that a stronger socio-economic partnership would attract “responsible, long-term investment” to the country.

The move comes amid ongoing discussions between Freetown and European diplomats to improve the country’s business environment by strengthening fiscal discipline, regulatory frameworks, and public financial management.
