Applications are now open for the 2026 Digital Energy Challenge, a major funding programme supporting innovative energy solutions across Africa.

The initiative, backed by the French Development Agency, is inviting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to submit digital projects that can improve energy access, support clean energy transition, and boost the performance of power utilities across the continent.

The programme offers a total funding package of €827,000, with grants of up to €400,000 for partnership projects and €150,000 for tech accelerator projects.

Applicants can apply under two main categories. The Tech Accelerator supports innovative digital projects across 51 African countries, including Sierra Leone. The Partnership category focuses on collaborative projects in Nigeria, working with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

Organisers say the challenge is designed to help scale solutions that are already tested, especially those using digital tools like software, data systems, telecom, and cloud technology. Selected projects must show strong innovation, include research and development, and be ready for implementation within one year.

Beyond funding, successful applicants will receive technical support, training, and access to a bootcamp. They will also benefit from networking opportunities and exposure through international communication campaigns.

The programme focuses on key areas such as improving energy planning, managing microgrids, and using data platforms to enhance electricity networks. These themes aim to solve major challenges facing energy systems in Africa.

The deadline for applications is June 17, 2026. Experts say the initiative offers a strong opportunity for African innovators to scale their ideas and contribute to solving the continent’s energy challenges.

With millions of people across Africa still lacking reliable electricity, the Digital Energy Challenge is expected to play a key role in supporting practical and scalable solutions for the future.
