Sierra Leone is set to host the 27th Assembly of Health Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a major regional meeting that will bring together health leaders from across West Africa.

The announcement was made jointly by the Government of Sierra Leone and the West African Health Organisation (WAHO). The meeting is expected to take place in Freetown in 2026.

According to officials, the assembly will focus on strengthening health systems across the region, improving emergency preparedness, and addressing ongoing public health challenges affecting ECOWAS member states.

The gathering will bring together ministers of health, senior government officials, and health experts to review progress on regional health programmes and agree on new strategies for cooperation.

Sierra Leone’s selection as host is seen as recognition of the country’s role in supporting regional health collaboration and reforms in recent years.

The government says it is committed to ensuring a successful event that will contribute to stronger health partnerships and improved healthcare delivery across West Africa.

The ECOWAS Health Ministers’ Assembly is held annually and serves as one of the most important decision-making platforms for public health policy in the region.
