A total of thirteen Sierra Leone Police officers have been selected for deployment to South Sudan as part of an international peacekeeping mission under the United Nations.
The officers, made up of ten men and three women, are scheduled to depart Sierra Leone on 28 and 30 March 2026 to join the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Their deployment is part of Sierra Leone’s continued contribution to global peacekeeping efforts, where security personnel from different countries work together to support peace, stability, and the protection of civilians in conflict-affected regions.
Before their departure, the officers received a formal briefing from the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, on Friday, 27 March 2026. During the session, he encouraged them to carry out their duties with professionalism, discipline, and integrity throughout the mission.
He reminded the officers that they would not only be representing the Sierra Leone Police but also the country as a whole on the international stage. He also highlighted the strong reputation built by previous Sierra Leonean peacekeepers, urging the new team to uphold that standard.
“They must continue to fly the flag of Sierra Leone high,” he said, while encouraging them to build good relationships with fellow peacekeepers from other countries and the local population in South Sudan.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan was established to help maintain peace and support the country’s stability following years of conflict. Sierra Leone has been actively involved in such missions for many years, contributing police and military personnel to different parts of the world.
Experts say these international deployments not only support global peace but also help improve the skills and experience of officers. Returning peacekeepers often bring back new knowledge and training that can strengthen policing and security services at home.
Sierra Leone’s participation in peacekeeping missions dates back several decades, and the country continues to play an important role in supporting international efforts to maintain peace and security.
The latest deployment further shows the country’s commitment to working with global partners to promote stability and protect lives in fragile regions.
