A Sierra Leonean scientist, Dr. Alhaji N’jai, has been recognised on the global stage after being featured in the inaugural Wiley Index of Inspiring Black Scientists.

The Index was launched as part of this year’s Black History Month celebrations. It is a collaborative effort between John Wiley & Sons and a committee of scholars. The aim is to create a publicly accessible global database that highlights outstanding Black scientists across countries, disciplines and career stages.

Dr. N’jai shared the news on Facebook, describing the recognition as a moment of deep honour. He said his journey from Ganya village in Falaba District, northern Sierra Leone, to the global scientific community shows what is possible through hard work, focus and commitment.

From Falaba to the Global Scientific Community

Dr. N’jai’s work spans biomedical science, immunology, public health, toxicology, environmental and systems biology, One Health, interdisciplinary social science and STEM education. His research has focused not only on advancing science but also on strengthening African research systems.

Unlike many recognitions that focus only on laboratory discoveries, this honour also reflects his leadership in promoting the decolonisation and democratisation of science. He has consistently advocated for stronger African participation in global research and for local scientists to lead solutions to health and environmental challenges affecting their communities.

The Wiley Index is intended to serve as an open resource for education, collaboration and networking. Scientists featured were nominated because of their inspiring contributions to science. An external committee, including community stakeholders, will regularly update and curate the Index to ensure it remains inclusive and relevant.

A Voice for African-Led Research

Dr. N’jai has been widely known for promoting African research development and representation in global science spaces. His work encourages young African scholars to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

According to his biography published by Salone Messenger, Dr. N’jai’s academic and professional journey reflects resilience, discipline and service. From humble beginnings in rural Sierra Leone, he built a career that now influences public health, environmental research and systems biology discussions at international levels.

His recognition comes at a time when conversations about diversity in global science are growing stronger. Many institutions are now calling for fair representation, equitable partnerships and stronger research systems in Africa.

What the Recognition Means for Sierra Leone

For Sierra Leone, Dr. N’jai’s inclusion in the Wiley Index sends a strong message. It highlights that talent from rural communities can compete globally when given opportunity and support.

It also places Sierra Leone within an international scientific network that promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing. Young scientists and students across the country may now see his journey as proof that global impact can begin in a small village.

As the Wiley Index continues to expand, Dr. Alhaji N’jai’s name will remain part of a growing global database celebrating Black excellence in science. His story is not only about personal achievement, but also about building pathways for future generations of African scientists.
