Zainab Sheriff Declared Wanted by Police

The Sierra Leone Police have declared Zainab Sheriff wanted in connection with alleged cases of incitement, threatening language, and related offences linked to statements made during the recent APC mammoth meeting at Attouga Mini Stadium.

A notice circulated by the police identifies Sheriff, a member of the All People’s Congress (APC) from Freetown, as wanted under Warrant No. W/A 105/2026. She is sought for offences described as “threatening language, incitement and other related offences.” Members of the public are being urged to provide any information that could help the authorities locate her, with a reward offered for credible leads.

This development comes in the wake of enforcement action related to the same APC rally where the party was fined by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) for violations of Section 39 of the Political Parties Act. Statements attributed to party leaders, including chants and remarks made against the President at the event, sparked scrutiny from both the PPRC and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Senior party figures, including the APC National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya, were invited by the CID and briefly detained for investigation over similar statements. The PPRC had fined the party NLe350,000 for what it described as profane, provocative, and inciting conduct at the Attouga gathering.

The police notice does not specify exact comments Sheriff is accused of making, but it aligns with broader actions taken against individuals involved in that rally. Public debate has been intense, with supporters arguing that political discourse has been criminalised, and critics saying regulatory bodies are enforcing standards meant to protect public peace.

Political rallies in Sierra Leone are often charged spaces where emotions run high. The authorities maintain that statements believed likely to provoke unrest or threaten national stability can attract legal consequences under existing statutes. As it stands, the case against Sheriff has not yet been tested in court, and no formal trial has been reported.

Meanwhile, the situation continues to unfold. Citizens are encouraged to assist law enforcement if they have relevant information, and the public is watching closely how this matter will affect both political expression and accountability in the run-up to future electoral cycles.
