Gabon football has entered a period of deep reckoning after the country’s disastrous Africa Cup of Nations campaign ended with unprecedented disciplinary action against the national team.
In the aftermath of AFCON, Gabon’s football authorities announced the suspension of the national team, the dismissal of the entire coaching staff, and the removal of several senior players, including long-time captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The sweeping decision followed a humiliating tournament in which Gabon finished bottom of their group without a single point.
Gabon arrived at the tournament with modest expectations but a belief that experience could steady the side. Instead, the team suffered three straight defeats in the group stage, exiting early and raising serious questions about preparation, leadership, and direction.
Their AFCON group proved unforgiving. Gabon lost all three matches, conceding heavily and failing to control key moments. The final blow came in a narrow but painful 3–2 defeat to Ivory Coast, a match that confirmed their bottom-place finish and elimination. By the end of the group stage, Gabon had no wins, no draws, and little to show for their campaign.
For many fans, the results reflected long-standing issues rather than a single bad tournament.
Federation Responds With Rare Sanctions
In response, the Gabonese authorities moved swiftly and decisively. The national team was suspended, the technical bench was dissolved, and senior figures within the squad were dropped as part of what officials described as a complete reset.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon’s most recognisable footballer and captain for many years, was among those removed. At 36, the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker missed the final group match due to injury, but his absence did little to soften the federation’s stance.
However, Aubameyang also had his say on socials, refuting allegations of him being behind the failed campaign. He seems to agree that Gabon has deeper structural issues that go beyond individual player capabilities.
Ever since his appointment, his message has struck a chord with fans who think there is a problem with the planning, management, and youth development of the team.
Traditionally, whenever a national football team has under-performed in tournaments in Africa, a government or a federation has dissolved a national team. But this has rarely been witnessed in recent years.
FIFA has always adopted a tough stance against interference by governments on issues pertaining to football. The action adopted by Gabon, thus, comes as a strange move in modern times, as it is bound to attract the attention of other continents.
The future of football in Gabon remains precarious. While authorities opine that strong actions are needed to regain discipline and national pride, many fear that this will further destabilize football.

For the fans, the hope would be that this represents not just punishment but reform. Without clear plans for rebuilding, youth development, and transparent leadership, suspensions and sackings alone may not heal the wounds left by a painful AFCON campaign.
One thing is clear: Gabon’s bottom-place finish and three straight defeats have triggered one of the most dramatic post-tournament reactions in recent African football history. Whether it leads to renewal or further decline remains to be seen.
