Chaos in SLPP Elections: Chief’s House Burned Amid Violence

Tensions flared in Mile 91, Tonkolili District, as violent clashes broke out during the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) lower-level elections. Supporters of the two main candidates for the Tonkolili District Chairmanship—Ahmed Saybom Kanu and Mohamed Orman Bangura—engaged in violent confrontations, resulting in significant unrest.

House Allegedly Burned Amid Political Violence

A viral video circulating on social media shows a house engulfed in flames, allegedly belonging to former Regent Chief Yusif Barrie, also known as Atatie. Reports indicate that valuable properties worth millions were destroyed. However, attempts to reach Barrie for confirmation have been unsuccessful, as he has not responded to calls.

Authorities Silent Amidst Unrest

The Mile 91 Police Station has not issued an official statement, and SLPP authorities in the area have also remained unreachable. Despite this, multiple sources in Mile 91 confirm that the situation remains chaotic, raising security concerns for local residents.

SLPP Postpones Elections Pending Investigation

Following the violent outbreak, the SLPP Secretariat in Tonkolili District has announced the postponement of elections in the area until further notice. The SLPP Secretary-General in Tonkolili, Robert Salia Kamara, confirmed the violence and the burning of a house. However, he did not specify the owner of the property or the individuals responsible for the attack.

Calls for Security Intervention

The incident has left residents fearful for their safety, with many urging the Sierra Leone Police to intervene and restore order. A voice in the viral video accuses incumbent chairman Ahmed Saybom Kanu of orchestrating the attack, alleging that his supporters were responsible for setting the house on fire. However, Saybom has not responded to these allegations.

Unverified Claims and Ongoing Investigation

While the authenticity of the viral video remains unverified, its disturbing content has intensified public concern. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the incident to determine those responsible and ensure justice is served.
