President Julius Maada Bio, alongside First Lady Fatima Bio, medical professionals, and hundreds of citizens, led a prostate cancer awareness walk on Thursday. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment for prostate cancer, a condition that predominantly affects men.
In his address to participants, President Bio expressed gratitude to Sierra Leone’s women and youth for their support in addressing a men’s health issue and called on men to reciprocate by championing causes like gender-based violence and rape.
“This is a call to action for men to stand in support of women on critical issues like rape and domestic violence. We must change the narrative to build a safer, more inclusive society,” the President emphasized.
Consultant Urologist Dr. Gordon Harris and Pathologist Professor Babatunde Duduyemi highlighted the importance of regular screenings for men over 40.
“Knowing your health status early can save lives,” President Bio reiterated, echoing the medical experts’ advice. Dr. Harris reminded attendees that not all prostate issues are cancerous, underscoring the need for routine check-ups to distinguish between benign and serious conditions.
President Bio used the occasion to announce significant progress in Sierra Leone’s healthcare infrastructure. He revealed that discussions during his recent visit to Vienna have paved the way for introducing advanced technology for prostate cancer treatment in the country.
“We are in advanced stages of acquiring the necessary equipment, a testament to my government’s commitment to improving healthcare for Sierra Leoneans,” he stated.
First Lady Fatima Bio praised the participants for their dedication and emphasized the importance of building a society where health and well-being are priorities for all.
“Together, we can create a future where both men and women thrive,” she remarked, thanking President Bio for his unwavering support of health and gender equality initiatives.
Professor Duduyemi reassured attendees that Sierra Leone is making strides in treating prostate cancer locally, citing advancements in capacity building and infrastructure under President Bio’s leadership.
“Prostate cancer can be treated right here in our country. With the leadership and vision of President Bio, we’ve strengthened our ability to care for those affected,” Professor Duduyemi affirmed.
Themed “Waka for We Man Dem,” the walk served as a powerful symbol of unity, drawing attention to the importance of collective action in health advocacy.
President Bio concluded the event by commending First Lady Fatima Bio for her impactful social advocacy and thanking all participants for their solidarity.
