The vibrant sports scene in Kono District received a significant boost with the conclusion of the Kono Sports Promoters Association’s football tournament, which offered a substantial prize of 50 million leones. The thrilling final match between Nimikoro FC and 55 Sports FC took place at the Komo community field, where sports enthusiasts gathered to witness the event.

Among the attendees was Executive Director of the National Sports Authority  Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, who acknowledged the enthusiasm and commitment of the local community to developing football in the region. Expressing his appreciation for the invitation, Abdulai praised the association’s dedication to nurturing local talent and fostering sportsmanship.

In his remarks, Abdulai took the opportunity to highlight an important social issue affecting young people in Sierra Leone: the growing prevalence of “kush,” a potent and highly addictive synthetic drug. Addressing the community, he stressed the incompatibility of drug abuse with the spirit of sports. “Sports and drugs do not go hand in hand,” he stated, encouraging young athletes to pursue a healthy and disciplined lifestyle that aligns with the values of sportsmanship.

The event, marked by a strong turnout and lively atmosphere, exemplified the role of local sports as a unifying force and as a platform for addressing broader social issues. With the ongoing commitment from sports authorities and community organizers, the tournament signifies not only a celebration of talent but also a call for positive choices among Sierra Leone’s youth.
