Makeni, Sierra Leone – October 13, 2024: The Student Union Government (SUG) of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST) Makeni Campus, through the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, has officially written to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), seeking urgent clarification on two key issues affecting the student body.

In the letter addressed to the DVC, the SUG voiced concerns over rumors circulating that continuous assessment for the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic year had been permanently suspended. Continuous assessment is a critical component of academic evaluation, and the uncertainty surrounding its status has caused widespread anxiety among students. The SUG is requesting immediate clarification from the administration on whether continuous assessment will be implemented for both semesters this academic year.

The letter also highlighted a second pressing issue: the significant delay in the publication of first-semester results. According to the SUG, the administration had promised during a July 3, 2024, press briefing that the first-semester grades would be published within two weeks. However, the results were only released on September 28, 2024, before being quickly withdrawn due to errors. Despite assurances from the administration that the corrected grades would be re-released within two days, students have yet to receive their results as of October 13, 2024.

With the academic year drawing to a close and no confirmed results in sight, the SUG emphasized the increasing stress this delay has caused. Students rely on timely results to demonstrate academic progress to their parents and secure necessary financial support for their studies, including payment of tuition fees.

The SUG is calling on the administration to provide clear answers regarding the continuous assessment for both semesters and a detailed explanation for the delay in the release of grades. They have requested a response from the DVC within 24 hours, underscoring the urgency of the matter.

The letter was also copied to key university officials, including the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Dean of Students, and Head of Academics.

For further updates, the student body remains hopeful for a swift response from the administration, ensuring transparency and timely action to safeguard the academic progress of students.
