Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabbah, joined the staff of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington, D.C., to celebrate a monumental achievement: the country’s recognition under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact. The event, held at the Embassy’s Chancery building, marked a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s foreign policy efforts.
“We are here to celebrate the MCC victory, which is largely due to the vital role played by the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington, D.C. This mission has been instrumental,” said Minister Kabbah, praising the Embassy’s efforts in strengthening relations with the U.S. He emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining a vibrant diplomatic presence in Washington, noting that “Sierra Leone is working to reclaim its position globally, and the Washington Mission is central to that effort.”
Minister Kabbah also acknowledged the Embassy’s critical role in managing diplomatic challenges following Sierra Leone’s June 2024 elections, particularly in addressing misinformation and clarifying the country’s political situation to U.S. authorities. He commended the Embassy’s diplomatic engagement with the U.S. State Department, which contributed to the strengthening of bilateral ties.
Accompanied by newly appointed Acting Director General of the Ministry, Allan Logan, Minister Kabbah reassured the Embassy staff of the government’s commitment to bolstering their work. Logan echoed the Minister’s sentiments, congratulating the Mission on its pivotal role in securing the MCC Compact, a victory that is likely to attract further investment to Sierra Leone.
H.E. Sidique Abou-Bakarr Wai, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the United States, expressed gratitude for the Minister’s recognition of the Embassy’s contributions. He assured that the Mission would continue to engage with U.S. Congress, the Senate, and other agencies to advance Sierra Leone’s foreign policy and strengthen the country’s international standing.
This celebration highlights Sierra Leone’s growing partnership with the U.S. and the critical role of its Washington Mission in securing the nation’s future.
