Facts you should know about Handedness

By Evidence Joe

Handedness, or hand preference, is the tendency to be more comfortable and skilled when using one hand over the other to perform tasks. Generally, the world is made up of 10% of ‘southpaw’ or lefties, 85% of right-handed people and  5% of ambidextrous people, (ie, people who have the ability to use both hands with equal dexterity) to write, eat, work, handle things or  in sports and other activities.

Like most aspects of human behavior, handedness is a complex trait that appears to be influenced by multiple factors, including genetics, environment, uniqueness and chance. … More specifically, handedness appears to be related to differences between the right and left halves of the brain.

Historically, left-handed people have been viewed and treated as outcasts, and ones with abnormalities.According to myth, giving a toast with your left hand is the same as placing a curse on the person you’re greeting. When Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, depictions showed her as being left-handed, in order to appear more evil. Left-handers were also harshly discriminated against during the 18th and 19th centuries, and it was often “beaten out” of them.

In the Middle Ages, left-handed people feared being accused of witchcraft. There was, and still the belief that anything that has to do with lefties is indecent, on holy and inadmissable. As recently as the early 20th century, many educators in the United States forced left-handers to “retrain” their natural tendencies in order to become right-handed. Scientists also used to think that left-handedness was due to minor brain damage in early development. These myths have been debunked over the years, and some have asserted that being left-handed is actually associated with higher intelligence, uniqueness and gifting. While the claim is intriguing, medical literature reveals inconclusive results. But do you know right-handed people are smarter, rare and often geniuses? Don’t you think it’s safer driving a left-hand car, more cute and befitting wearing  wrist watch or a ring on the left hand? Do you still have a misgiving of  bad luck when you hit your left feet? Why wouldn’t you use your left hand  or leg in doing the same  things you do with their right counterparts?

Again, do you know strong right-handers seem to perform slightly better on cognitive tests when compared to left-handers? The truth is, lefties often have better IQs, save for few ones whom might be dammed and unlucky. I pray you never find one who will annoy you with stupidity.

Here are some famous lefties who’re great world icons: philosopher Aristotle, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, baseball legend Babe Ruth, Benjamin Franklin and Henry Ford, along with four former U.S. and Sierra Leonean presidents, England’s Prince William, Michaelangelo, Renaissance artist Leonardo DaVinci, Barack Obama, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and countless former heads of States, great figures in Africa  and in many other continents  *Kindly add  your name and others on the list if you’re one of us.*

Right-handers are generally intelligent though. However, my analysis shows that people who were intellectually gifted or following typical development were and are  just as likely to be left-handed. A study in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsTrusted Source looked at 18 studies measuring the full IQ scores of more than 20,000 participants. Although data suggested that right-handed people had slightly higher IQ scores compared to left-handers, the scientists noted that intelligence differences between right and left-handed people were negligible overall. These traits suggest that left-handed individuals may have superior verbal skills. Though both are well-known, there are also some less common variations.

Children of left-handed parents are more likely to be left-handed than children of right-handed parents. But because lefties are comparatively rare, most children of left-handed parents are right-handed.Cultural influences, environment, and prenatal exposures may also play a role in determining handedness.

In psychology, for instance, intelligence may be described as possessing one or a combination of the following attributes: a higher ability level, such as abstract reasoning, problem-solving, or decision-making,
ability to learn emotional knowledge, creativity, adaptation etc. There are different theories of intelligence and ways to measure it, including the well-known intelligence quotient (IQ) tests…

*Help me wish all left-handed people a happiest Anniversary today.*
